nelson-flightdeck.jpg The Flight Deck Restaurant is an aviation buff's candy store! It is a family owned and operated restaurant with an aviation theme like no other.

Owned by Ted Stambolitis (president), The Flight Deck Restaurant is a veritable museum of aviation memorabilia. Ted has collected paintings, photos, posters and

models of some of the most celebrated military and commercial aircraft our country has ever flown, not to mention autographed photos from the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels and various military pilots from South Carolina. Ted is mostly fond of the WWII era and has also started a "memorial wall" to remember our fallen heroes.

The restaurant sports photos, posters, patches and models representing aviation from every era of our military history. The walls are covered with autographed photos, newspaper clippings and posters ranging from the Wright Flyer of 1908 to modern day Thunderbirds. Models of planes hang from the ceiling and are placed as static displays around the interior of the restaurant . The tables are covered with patches from air crews and photos of planes, pilots and crew members. And just for fun a life size statue of King Kong juts out from the front wall complete with a model Stearman in hand!

One thing Ted did not have was a representation of the U.S. Civil Air Patrol. Ted is very aware of the important roll CAP had in WWII and appreciates the services they provide today. In August, Capt. Larry K. Nelson, CAP (Sumter Composite Squadron, SC-075), made a presentation of a framed CAP recruiting poster "Eyes of the Home Skies," from the WW II era for him to add to his collection. He was very excited to have the poster and looked forward to adding to his collection. Capt. Nelson and his family are frequent patrons to the restaurant.

The family style restaurant, decorated in all things aviation has a fun American menu named after famous aircraft. The menu includes Greek food such as gyros, Greek salads and pastries, Italian food, hot baked sandwiches, and homemade cheesecakes. The food and service are great but the décor is the icing on the cake!

If you would like to see his collection and enjoy some good eating, head to Lexington, S.C. to check it out.
