Continuing a Family Legacy

SPARTANBURG, S.C. —  Leadership came full circle Aug. 1 as 1st Lt. John Baddorf assumed command of the Spartanburg Composite Squadron— nearly a decade after his grandfather, Maj. Bill Baddorf, once led the very same unit in 2017.

Bill Baddorf made significant improvements in the meeting location and was pivotal in the creation of the Spartanburg Community Aviation Program.  

The formal change of command ceremony, held at American Legion Post 28, marked a significant milestone for the squadron and for the Baddorf family. Community members, Civil Air Patrol officers, cadets, and families gathered to celebrate the occasion and witness the passing of command from 1st Lt. Lane Hughey to Baddorf.

Well-respected for his deep knowledge of CAP operations, emergency services, and cadet programs, Baddorf brings both a professional legacy and a personal one to his new role. His steady leadership and commitment to mentorship have earned him the trust of his fellow members and the wider Spartanburg community.

The ceremony honored Hughey’s dedicated service and highlighted the squadron’s enduring commitment to leadership, service and excellence—now strengthened by a sense of tradition that spans generations.
