Are You Ready for Encampment? Start Preparing Now!

Encampment is an unforgettable experience—but it’s also physically and mentally demanding. Whether you’re a first-time cadet or a returning staff member, getting ready starts well before Day One. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your encampment experience:
Double-Check Your Packing List
Make sure you have everything on the official packing list. This isn’t just a suggestion—it’s your lifeline for the week. Items like another pair of boot socks or extra uniform might seem like overkill now, but you’ll be grateful when you need them. Don’t wait until the last minute; start now while there’s still time to buy or borrow what you need.
Get a Regulation Haircut
Members must be in full grooming and appearance compliance as outlined in CAP Manual 39-1. That means no faddish styles, no out-of-regs ponytails, and no hair too long for your gender’s standards. Get your haircut now—don’t wait until the day before or risk being turned away at in-processing.
Say Goodbye to Soda (and Energy Drinks)
Soda and energy drinks aren’t allowed at encampment (and cadets are never allowed energy drinks at CAP). If you’re used to drinking them daily, the first few days can be rough. Start weaning off now to avoid the caffeine crash.
Cut the Candy
No Skittles, Snickers, or gummy worms here. If your body is used to a constant sugar fix, you’ll want to ease out of that habit ahead of time to avoid withdrawal and keep your energy stable throughout the week.
Reset Your Sleep Schedule
Encampment wake-up calls can be as early as 5:30 a.m. Start training your body now by going to bed earlier and waking up earlier each day. That way, the early mornings won’t hit you like a freight train.
Get Moving
PT (Physical Training) happens every morning at encampment. You don’t need to be in Olympic shape, but a little daily exercise—walking, jogging, stretching, pushups—can help you start strong and feel confident.
Spend Time Outside (and Hydrate!)
You’ll be outdoors a lot during encampment. Start building your tolerance by spending more time outside now. Drink plenty of water every day to stay hydrated, and start applying sunscreen regularly so your skin gets used to it. A sunburn on Day 1 is a miserable way to spend the week.
Detox from Devices
There are no video games, cell phones, or streaming at encampment. You’ll be focused on leadership, discipline, and teamwork. Start scaling back now so it’s not a shock to the system. You’ll be surprised how great it feels to unplug and live in the moment.
Encampment isn’t just another summer camp—it’s a chance to challenge yourself, grow as a cadet, and become part of something bigger than yourself. Start your prep now and arrive ready to lead, learn, and succeed.
